According to Hindu mythology, the Char Dham Yatra holds immense spiritual power. Adi Shankaracharya, the great 8th-century philosopher-saint, established these four pilgrimage sites to rejuvenate Hindu spirituality across India. Each dham is associated with sacred rivers and divine deities:
Yamunotri marks the origin of the sacred Yamuna River, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. The temple was built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. Devotees cook rice and potatoes in the natural hot springs as prasad.
Gangotri is the spiritual source of the holy Ganges, where Goddess Ganga descended to earth. King Bhagirath meditated here for centuries to bring Ganga to purify his ancestors' souls.
Kedarnath houses one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Legend says the Pandavas sought Shiva's blessings here after the Mahabharata war. The temple withstood the devastating 2013 floods, considered a divine miracle.
Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his meditation form. It is believed that Adi Shankaracharya discovered the idol of Badrinarayan in the Alaknanda River and established the temple.
